Knowing how to recognize the various types of skin cancer is important for preventing and treating the condition. Three of the major forms of skin cancer are described here.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
The most common of all skin cancer types, basal cell carcinoma forms in the deepest part of the skin’s outermost layer, the epidermis, and is caused by significant exposure to intense sun. This type of cancer presents as reddened areas of skin, growths that are shiny, and sores. Fortunately, these growths rarely spread to organs. But they can cause scarring if not treated properly.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
The second most common type of skin cancer, squamous cell carcinoma forms in the upper layer of the epidermis. Characteristics of this form of cancer include reddened areas of skin that form scales or crusts, and which may also bleed. This type of cancer is caused by cumulative exposure to UV rays and can metastasize.
Melanoma
The deadliest form of skin cancer, melanomas occur in the pigment-producing cells of the skin, the melanocytes. Melanomas typically look black or brown in color and can be difficult to treat if not detected early enough. Left untreated, melanomas can lead to death.
